How I Ended Up Here

IMG_3258.jpeg

Hi, I'm Michelle.

For roughly fifteen years, I was a paramedic firefighter and Fire Captain. My career taught me a lot about emergencies—but it also taught me something unexpected: just how valuable ordinary moments really are.

When you've spent years missing holidays, leaving dinners half-eaten, waking up in the middle of the night for calls, and never quite knowing when your plans might change, you develop a deep appreciation for the moments that don't.

A slow morning with good coffee (okay...tea in my case). A meal around a table with people you love. A hike that leaves your legs tired and your mind clear. A road trip where the scenic route is the whole point. A comfortable bed after a day outside. Those things aren't luxuries to me—they're reminders not to take ordinary life for granted.

That's why I created Not Your Typical Path.

This isn't about chasing the most famous destinations or checking places off a bucket list. It's about helping people spend their free time well.

Here you'll find honest weekend guides, scenic drives, memorable restaurants, hidden gems, and thoughtful stories about the places I visit. I'll tell you what surprised me, what I'd do differently next time, what's worth the splurge, and what I'd skip altogether. My goal isn't to convince you to go everywhere—it's to help you choose experiences that fit the life you actually want to live.

Ty is still my favorite travel buddy, and you'll see plenty of him throughout these adventures. But this space is where I get to share what I've learned, what I'm still discovering, and hopefully help you create a few stories of your own along the way.

If something here inspires you to take the long way home, plan that weekend you've been talking about, or simply make a little better use of the free time you've worked so hard to earn, then I've done exactly what I hoped to do.

Thanks for being here.

— Michelle

What I'm Always Looking For

  • A restaurant I'd recommend without hesitation.

  • A trail that's worth the drive.

  • A hotel I'd happily book again.

  • A book that changes how I think.

  • A weekend that reminds me to slow down

The best adventures are the ones I get to share with the people I love.
