Florence, Oregon

Florence, Oregon is beautiful, quiet, and much sleepier than expected. Come for the coast, the food, and the hiking. Just know a few things before you go.

Florence, Oregon surprised me with how quiet it was—even in summer. We spent three days exploring the coast, hiking, eating around Old Town and figuring out a few things I really wish I’d known before we arrived. These are my Field Notes from the trip: what surprised me, what mattered, and what I’d want to know next time.

Make dinner reservations earlier than you think.

Florence gets quiet early, and some of the places we wanted to eat were much harder to get into than I expected.

Don’t underestimate how sleepy it gets at night.

That’s part of Florence’s charm—but if you’re expecting a lively coastal town late into the evening, this probably isn’t it.

Leave time for the coast beyond town.

Some of my favorite parts of the weekend weren’t in Florence itself. The surrounding beaches, trails and scenic drives were a big part of why the trip worked for us.

This is by no means everything there is to know about Florence. They’re simply the things I noticed while I was there. For the full version, download my Field Notes above.
